“See, This Dame Walks In”
Should we chalk up this failure to achieve perfect friendship to Veronica’s own peculiar failings? Or could it rather be a symptom of living in Neptune, a town riddled with murder, theft, betrayal, and intrigue? This atmosphere of corruption is what makes the show so intriguing, and it’s what keeps Mars Investigations afloat. But it doesn’t seem to have a healthy effect on relationships, Veronica’s in particular. Could her world ever be a place where she finds true friendship? Veronica Mars belongs to the film noir genre, in which the central protagonist is typically disillusioned, cynical, and alienated from society—a description that fits Veronica to a T.12 After all, this is the girl who tells us in the pilot episode: “If there’s something I’ve learned in this business, the people you love let you down.” Veronica inhabits a world of moral ambiguity and double crosses. It’s not our world, and certainly not the world of Aristotle. Perhaps in the end it’s the noir nature of Veronica’s world that stands in the way of her having perfect friendships.
However, in the trailer for the Veronica Mars movie, we see our protagonist exhibit a level of self-awareness that perhaps wasn’t present before. Asked in an interview what her background “says about a person,” she responds: “Compulsive, clearly. Addictive personality. Possible adrenaline junky.”13 Veronica seems to realize that outside of Neptune her circumstances and behavior appear abnormal—and that’s putting it mildly! Having left her previous occupation behind, she’s no longer in the business that taught her that everyone lets you down. Having lived for several years outside the noir world of Neptune, maybe she’s finally ready to embody the show’s theme song in a new way: a long time ago we used to be friends of utility or pleasure, but now I’m ready for a perfect friendship of virtue.
